Stereolab - "Aerial Troubles"

Stereolab have announced their first new album in fifteen years and shared the lead single, "Aerial Troubles."

Don't call it a comeback, Stereolab have been playing live shows for years at this point. In 2019, nearly a decade after their last studio album, the experimental pop groop reconvened for live shows and have been pretty active ever since. Recently, the band began to follow the patterns most artists tend to share when they're about to release new music. Their social media accounts surfaced images of brown paper bags that had been stamped shut and mysterious captions abounded. Last week, fans received unannounced vinyl seven inches in the mail with what seemed like a word search of an album cover that possibly held clues as to what was happening. Well, today the band announced their first new studio album since 2010. It's called Instant Holograms on Metal Film and it's out on May 23. Along with the announcement of a new record, the band shared the new single "Aerial Troubles" as well and it's vintage Stereolab. Squelchy organ jams, a motorik drum beat, krautrock grooves and those cosmic lounge vibes all rise to the surface of this effervescent track that makes you believe it truly could come from no one else. Along with singer Lætitia Sadler's vocals come the addition of additional male and female (presumably) background voices as well, a first for this band, and after a bit of a piano build-up, things really pick up and we're hit with the avant-pop sensibilities that have defined their sound since the beginning. It might not be a comeback, but it's still a welcome return to have new music from Stereolab in the world.

Instant Holograms on Metal Film is out on May 23.
