Stateside, most people probably aren't super familiar with the term Britpop and if they are, most likely they think of Oasis when they hear that word. Perhaps they think of Blur too. Well, if you've never explored the genre past the Oasis vs Blur rivalry that culminated in 1995, you're missing out! Before those groups dominated U.K. airwaves, the Stone Roses dropped their masterpiece of a debut that set the tone for what was to come. Hitting us at the same time as those two gargantuan acts, however, was also Pulp. Although the group had existed for nearly two decades by this point, 1995 also saw the release of Pulp's smash Different Class which included the banger "Common People." Sadly, the band's popularity never translated in the U.S. like their peers, but when the band reunited in 2012, there was a level of excitement for those in the know and many of us finally had the chance to sing along with the common people when the band tore up the stage. The band's reunion has continued over the years and now they've announced their first album in 24 years and have delivered their brand new single, "Spike Island," to hold us over until the record drops in June. The song is classic Pulp with sleek grooves, a chic rhythm and a glossy sheen that sparkles at just the right moment. A slinky vibe flow throughout and Jarvis Cocker's vocals are locked-in making feel like the '90s all over again. It can be nerve-racking when old favorites re-emerge, but the vitality and energy of Pulp's recent shows have helped to ease those concerns and "Spike Island" proves that they still have what it takes.
More is out June 6.
