The last album from Unknown Mortal Orchestra, the psych-rock/pop project led by Ruban Nielson, was 2023's V, but this year they're dropping a new album called IC-02 Bogotá and they've said it's the sequel to 2018's IC-01 Hanoi. Like that album, the new one seems to be an instrumental one and our first taste is the ten-minute epic, "Earth 1." Channeling the sounds of '70s jazz-fusion era Miles Davis and the progressive sounds of Herbie Hancock's electric keys of the same decade, with a hint of Can's elaborate and experimental grooves, this is a funked-out, krauty version of the band that really is one for the heads. Deep melodies, complex rhythms, and other eccentric flourishes are all over this one and it's a kaleidoscopic odyssey with heady grooves and swirling, expansive colors. Fans who might be expecting another jangly pop banger with a bit of a psyched-out twist will be in for a surprise here and may take an offramp from this cosmic highway, but for those invested in the dazzling and adventurous side of the band this should be an exciting and vibe-filled listen that stretches out into a pure comfort zone of undeniable boogie.
IC-02 Bogotá is out March 28.
