Last year, incredibly heavy band SUMAC released the great album The Healer while rapper/poet Moor Mother dropped her latest record, The Great Bailout. Now, in the year 2025, the two artists have teamed-up and announced a joint album called The Film. Our first taste of this new collaboration is aptly titled "Scene 1" and is pretty close to what you might expect if you layered Moor Mother's epic spoken word verses over SUMAC's punishing audio assault. Over grating, ruthless riffs and surging blasts of noise, Moor Mother delivers her matter of fact and impenetrable flow and unites their sounds in a rather brutal experience. It's an unlikely pairing, but one that goes especially hard and proves to be a challenging, yet rewarding result. Her words are haunting and really paint the picture of what many may be feeling and thinking during such bleak times. It's dark and unsettling, but absolutely something we deserve.
The Film is out on April 25.
