Buoyant rhythms have always been a slick trick of Noah Lennox, best known for his work in Animal Collective and on his own under the moniker Panda Bear, and his knack for joyous pop melodies has helped make his otherwise avant-garde stylings all the more accessible. "Ferry Lady" isn't his most obvious pop maneuver, but it does a fine job of giving us a bubbly tune that offers hints of Samba and dabs of Tropicália with its shuffling beat and and general ease. The mariachi-influence from his latest collaboration with Sonic Boom also lurks on this track with slight horn flourishes adding extra texture under the already sparkling vibes. Hearing it in the dead of winter makes you long for spring and warmer weather which will no doubt make basking in this album all the more appealing, but for now it's a nice treat to help tide us over.
Sinister Grift is out February 28.
