The post-rock legends Mogwai are known for their sweeping, cinematic tunes that can make the most mundane activities feel inspired and full of life. Their typical highs and lows can make their songs anthemic, going from soft, twinkling guitar to raging epics with next to no notice. They also can make songs that sound massive and muscular even when the tempo isn't so varied. "Fanzine Made of Flesh" is one of the later, it's a track that surges with energy, but it maintains most of its speed throughout its run time as the band keeps things under control. There's a sparkle of electronics that floats between their usual swelling guitar tones and the rhythm keeps things moving along at a firm pace, never losing momentum, but keeping things a bit restrained as well right until the very end when things start to become a bit unwieldy and the textures take over. When speaking about the track, the band's Stuart Braithwaite said "'Fanzine Made Of Flesh' was written in Brooklyn when I was staying at Alex Kapranos's house in autumn 2023. In my head it sounds like a cross between ABBA, Swervedriver, and Kraftwerk though that might be ludicrous. It originally has a straight vocal but we ended up vocoding it on the last day of recording. It's pretty different and I'm really happy with how it turned out."
The Bad Fire is out January 24.
