Following last year's excellent collaboration with the Messthetics (the band that features the rhythm section of the all-mighty Fugazi), James Brandon Lewis has announced a new record that is all his own. Well, he's still got a backing band featuring Chad Taylor and Josh Werner, but this one is billed as his trio and not a collab with another group. Today, Lewis and co shared "Prince Eugene" which is a vibey tune that includes a cruising bass line and a Zimbabwean mbira plus the expected bop of Lewis' serene saxophone playing. It's a groovy track that moves with elevated touches of rhythm and bluesy moods as the trio lock in tight for a solid bond and a touch of funk that feels almost as meditative as it does invigorating.
Apple Cores is out February 7.
