Deafheaven - "Magnolia"

Deafheaven have announced their sixth studio album, Lonely People with Power, and shared the lead single "Magnolia."

On their last album, Infinite Granite, shoegaze/black-metal outfit Deafheaven took their sound in a new direction. Releasing much of the tension that makes most of their music sound so massive, the band swerved towards ambient and dreamier sounds which left a lot of their fans looking for something a bit more and giving their reputation as one of metal's most divisive bands more ground to stand on as they made their least-metal album to date (I still thought it was a good album!). Well, now Deafheaven have announced the follow-up to their 2021 record and there's no question about it; the brutal metal-side of Deafheaven is back, baby! From the opening chugging riffs of "Magnolia," it's clear that the band have returned to make their heaviest music in a decade. Hitting us with an absolutely punishing riff and killer blast beats, the band is fully warmed up to deliver us a surging tune right when vocalist George Clark's wickedly sinister growl begins to bark. This is the punishing and ruthless sound we last heard from the group around the time of their excellent album New Bermuda and it's a total knockout. After a pivot in their sound and a break to try something outside of their typical sonic realm, it appears that the band has recalibrated and turned back towards what they do best: unleash a rocketing fury of pure sonic mayhem.

Lonely People with Power is out March 26.
