The road to Sky Ferreira's follow-up record to Night Time, My Time has been bombarded with obstacles, most of which seem to stem from the label that dropped her about a year after her underrated 2022 track "Don't Forget" was released. Now it seems like that long-promised album could actually come out in 2025. Until then, Sky has shared a new song, which in and of itself is an achievement given her history of label disputes. "Leash" follows "Don't Forget" with its subtle tributes to shoegazers My Bloody Valentine. While "Don't Forget" leaned heavily on the band's drum sounds, this time around she oozes some warped "Only Shallow"-esque guitar squalls and buries her vocals deeper into the mix than you'd expect on a pop song. A smoldering tune, it burns with despair and builds up some churning, lush atmospherics that hits like a cloud of intoxicating texture, rich and full of promising determination. If the release of Masochism really is around the corner, "Leash" is a bold reminder of what lies in store.
