Julien Baker is a fantastic solo artists who has a stellar track record of great albums. She also is great when she's playing with others whether that's opening the Wild Hearts Tour with Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten or playing as one third of boygenius with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. Now Julien has teamed up with TORRES and while the duo haven't announced a name for this partnership (maybe they won't have one), they have shared their first official song together. This project has been billed as a country affair, but "Sugar in the Tank" doesn't have the twang you might expect, but it does sound like a Julien Baker tune. The duo trade off on vocals and there's some banjo plucking and some steel pedal in the background which goes towards the theme, but when the two connect on the chorus and the song starts to swell, it sounds like the standard indie rock you'd expect here (and that's a good thing). Baker has already proven her skills as a gifted song-writer, but it has become fascinating to watch how she seamlessly fits in with the groove of others as well. It'll be exciting to see how this develops over time and luckily we're just getting started.
