In 2022, Autre Ne Veut shared a song called "Okay." At the time, it seemed like a one-off, but today we've learned it was actually the first single from Autre Ne Veut's new album Love, Guess Who?? his first since 2015's Age of Transparency. "About to Lose" sounds like a track that was frozen in time, from an era when post-R&B felt like the next big thing, that has now been un-Earth and ready for consumption. A decade ago, this music was on the forefront of cool, but it was hard to imagine that anyone creating these moody, dark, electronic grooves could become one of the biggest pop stars in the world, escaping the shadows and bursting into the the neon-lit center of the pop music universe. Obviously Autre Ne Veut never got that big, but there was definitely a moment when his songs "Counting" and "Play By Play" felt like they should've been massive hits only to remain strongholds of the underground. It's unclear when the new songs for this album were written, but this track sure does sound like no time has passed since we last heard from Arthur Ashin. Featuring his elevated croon and delicate high notes, his synth-pop melodies are still in strong form here and the nostalgia comes back in full force on this one.
