Distilled moods of effortlessly spellbinding rhythms and grooves only begin to highlight the brilliance that comes from ambient jazz artist Nala Sinephro. On her gorgeous and flowing debut album Space 1.8 (one of my favorite albums of 2022), Sinephro greeted us with resilient and dreamy compositions that felt like a soundtrack to the subconsciousness or a musical mood board for your dreams. Now she's back and the intro song to her new album, also the lead single, once again opens things up in a dream-like state, her whimsical melodies breezing through time and space with controlled, purposeful, and dazzling wonder. "Continuum 1" moves with elegance and sophistication, it's thoughtful and intriguing, but also welcoming with its expansive palette and graceful moments that radiate with a calm and intentional glide. Pulling from the riches of transcendental jazz, the album delves into the influences of orchestral and electronic music and here she wonderfully embeds these sensations into her own unique blend of sonic elements, delivering some rich and full of texture. The album is structured as a celebration to the cycle of existence and it's hard to imagine listening to it in pieces rather than as one full piece of music and yet "Continuum 1" hits us like an amuse bouche, a gentle and delightful preview of what is to come.
Endlessness is out September 6.
