Japandroids - "Chicago"

The Canadian garage-rock duo Japandroids have announced their first album since 2017 and it will sadly be their last as well.

Things have been dormant for Japandroids for quite some time. In 2020, they released a live album in the early stages of the pandemic to spark some hope in dark times. They were on some festival line-ups when live music made its triumphant return, but they soon disappeared from posters and the experiences all together with little to no attention. In many ways, it seemed like the pair had quietly departed and called it quits. Well, I'm here to tell you dear readers that Japandroids aren't done just yet. Today, the band dropped their brand new single "Chicago" and announced their plans for what they're calling their final album, Fate and Alcohol. Blazing back in true form, "Chicago" is classic Japandroids with a 4/4 drum beat to kick us in to their high flying riffs that hit like a ton of bricks, their turbo-charged energy giving us one final blast of urgency as their almost-corny lyrics call for one final surge from the crowd. It's almost too good to be true, but then again, so is the legacy of the band. They've never positioned themselves as saviors of rock (or any genre), not have they touted themselves as the most talented musicians, but rather two dudes who love to rock out and let their adrenaline take over. "Chicago" proves that there's still some gas left in the tank and Fate and Alcohol seems primed to let the band put the pedal to the metal and floor it for one more killer run.

Fate and Alcohol is out October 18.
