As the release date for Jamie xx's second solo record finally approaches, anticipation continues to build. Nearly a decade after dropping the expansive, brilliant, and instant-classic In Colour, the xx band member will return with his new album that features guests like the Avalanches, Panda Bear, Honey Dijon, and Robyn. Well, today he's dropped the Robyn collaboration and it's called "Life." According to Jamie, he "made this track pretty fast (for me) and I loved it from day one," he said in a statement. "When I first heard Robyn's vocal it was at 6am after finishing playing at Pacha in Ibiza, it was the perfect moment. Robyn and I have spent time working together and hanging out for some years now, it's always a joy and always inspiring, I'm so glad and grateful that she is a part of In Waves. Thank you Robyn for bringing this track to life!" Building on classic house beats, the track infuses techno rhythms and Robyn's speak/sung vocals which give the song elements of traditional vogue and ballroom vibes that carries the torch Beyoncé lit on "Alien Superstar." Robyn also commented "I just want to see how 'Life' gets people dancing this summer. I can't wait for that. Jamie is such a brilliant creator, I'm excited to be part of his album." Stuttering beats and triumphant horns give the song its glowing pulse, but it almost feels like it's over too soon. Good things can't last forever, but in the all too brief jam there are moments or euphoria that feel just out of reach.
In Waves is out September 20.
