The Reds, Pinks and Purples - "What's Going On with Ordinary People"

Next month, The Reds, Pinks and Purples will release their new album Unwishing Well and today they've shared the latest single, "What's Going On with Ordinary People."

If you're an active reader here, you're probably aware of the prolific output Glenn Donaldson has been releasing with his band The Reds, Pinks and Purples. Since 2020, the band has put out roughly seven full-lengths in addition to some vinyl-only releases and EPs. In April, the band will drop yet another and the new single, "What's Going On with Ordinary People," reaffirms their breezy jangle-pop vibes that seem to be the perfect soundtrack to usher in the blossoming season ahead (the band's cover art only adds to this feeling). As expected, there's the gloom and doom style of Donaldson's mopey vocals, but when paired with the bright guitar work, the mood lightens just a bit to give us the enjoyable experience the band is so expertly able to craft. There are touches of Real Estate-like guitar work that brings forth simple, yet effective pop melodies that give the downcast nature of the songs a bit of shine and hints of sparkle. This song isn't one to reinvent the sound of the band, and with sonic elements as pure and refined as these there's no reason to break the mold, but here the band settles in for some of their crispest and most tailored work yet. Locked in to their style, the band fully commits to their essentials and delivers another guitar-pop gem.

Unwishing Well is out April 5.
