It's been a busy few years for Adrianne Lenker. She released a pair of solo records in 2020 titled songs & instrumentals and the two albums were packaged as one. She's also kept busy as the lead singer of Big Thief who released their epic double album Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You last year and returned this year with a pair of new tracks as well. Despite the non-stop action, Adrienne doesn't plan on slowing down any time soon. Next year she'll teach a songwriting class and has announced the plans for another solo album. While the details around the album are still unknown, she has shared the sparse new song "Ruined." Over echoing piano, the singer pleads her love with stirring emotions that tug at the heart strings. In a press release, Lenker commented “This song has been a quiet beacon for me. It may contain the essence of the gift of romantic love, but it’s mostly about something much bigger.” This is one of the more raw and direct songs we've heard from Lenker and her intimacy and vulnerability here shine with stunning results. “Can’t get enough of you / You come around and I’m ruined / You come around and I’m ruined.” She repeats this phrase throughout the song and by the end it sounds more of a reminder to herself than to the one she loves, a self reassurance that new love can be tough, contemplative, and unsure. It's a feeling so many of us have likely felt, but to hear it from Lenker makes it feel less alone.
