Julie Byrne has announced a new album called The Greater Wings. It's her first since 2017 and she shared the lead single, "Summer Glass," along with the announcement.
Julie Byrne's Not Even Happiness was one of my favorite albums of 2017 and I've spent the years following it wondering if we'd ever hear from her again. Today, Julie has finally announced her new album and with it comes a commanding lead single. Her last record was an acoustic folk opus full of hushed, eloquent numbers that sounded breathtakingly fragile while still pure and full of life. Each gorgeous track wrapped up the listener with sparkling arrangements that provided a tranquil beauty that sounded as if it could vanish with a gust of wind. On her grand return, Byrne plugs in her sound to create something larger than we've heard from her in the past. Her voice, once delicate, now booms with force, asserting her power that still feels restrained, yet more impactful than ever. Humming electronics give the song a defiant skin that is both muscular, but still radiates with her eternal beauty. Without losing any of the magic that made her last album sound so special, Byrne has amplified her songwriting and pushes herself to conquer new territory and expand her skills without losing what makes everything so wonderful.
"My hope for The Greater Wings is that it lives as a love letter to my chosen family and as an expression of the depth of my commitment to our shared future," Byrne commented in a statement on the album's release. She continued:
Being reshaped by grief also has me more aware of what death does not take from me. I commit that to heart, to words, to sound. Music is not bound to any kind of linear time, so in the capacity to record and speak to the future: this is what it felt like to me, when we were simultaneous, alive, occurring all at once. What it has felt like to go up against my edge and push, the love that has made it worth all this fight. These memories are my values, they belong with me.
The Greater Wings is out July 7.
