Yves Tumor - "Heaven Surrounds Us Like a Hood"

In a few weeks, Yves Tumor will release a new album and today we're getting one more single ahead of the drop.

You never really know quite what to expect from the avant-rocker Yves Tumor. Their futuristic rock sounds are truly unlike any other, but even fitting in to their own genre is, at times, nearly impossible. We've heard explosive rock tracks, experimental electronic numbers, and abstract pop anthems all of which could be created by no one else. "Heaven Surrounds Us Like a Hood" is another unexpected entry point into the evolving sound Tumor has been crafting for years and once again, the song unveils a new layer of creativity. Swimming in a bath of electronic textures, this one is one of the more dissonant tracks we've heard from Yves as the vocals blur into the background rather than taking a staggering, dominating presence at the forefront and while the beats on this one don't hit as hard as we've heard in the past, there is still something that takes hold with this one. At the center, the track peels apart with a euphoric breakdown before rebuilding itself on the back half. By now, we've come to realize that Yves Tumor is operating in a world all their own and remaking the ideas of what a rockstar can, and should, be in 2023. In the song's video, Yves uses a rose as a microphone while a glammed-out rock band blasts away around them, letting blazing synths and endless drum fills complete the make-up of the song while the dazzling falsettos from Tumor seem to reach towering new heights. In the past, Yves has sighted Bowie and Throbbing Gristle as influences on their career and this seems to be taking further shape as we inch closer to the new album, but rather than copying the ideas of these past innovators, Tumor reinvents what experimental and glam can represent in the present while always remaining one step ahead.

Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds) is out March 17.
