Spiritualized - "The Mainline Song"

Spiritualized have shared another single from their album Everything Was Beautiful, now due in April.

Last month, Spiritualized pushed back the release of their upcoming album to April. Today, however, the band shared another single from the record. So much of J Spaceman's catalogue could be described as "epic" and the latest song from Spiritualized continues to carry the torch. A slow rumble of fuzz, the sound of a train engine, clanging bells, and a heavenly chorale chant of emphatic "oohs" gradually lift the song and bring it to life as a full band comes together to give the song shape and rhythm. "The Mainline Song" is a rapturous track that slowly builds on itself before Jason Pierce cuts through the sound and tells someone to keep their voice down before asking if they'd like to go to the city tonight. It feels euphoric and full of life, a slight surprise for a man usually stricken with grief and grappling with the hardships of life. Here, however, he sounds triumphant and optimistic. "It's a beautiful night" he proclaims as he builds his case for going out. It's a beautiful night after all and hell, all of uptown is already asleep. It's hard to imagine how anyone could resist the urge, especially with a swell of sound so sweet scoring such a simple request. There are some slight parallels to Spacemen 3's epic "Big City" and it feels almost like this could be a sister-track with its repetitive rhythms and lyrical themes. Still, nearly four decades into the career of Spiritualized, it's remarkable how Pierce continues to churn out such brilliant works and "The Mainline Song" is one of his strongest in years.

Everything Was Beautiful is out April 22 via Fat Possum.
