The Reds, Pinks and Purples - "Don't Come Home Too Soon"

Early next year, Glenn Donaldson will release a new album under the moniker The Reds, Pinks and Purples. The lead single is dreamy, guitar-pop bliss.

Donaldson has been on quite a tear as of late. Earlier this year he released an album credited to The Reds, Pinks and Purples and one with Jeremy Earl of the band Woods under the name Painted Shrines. Both albums are tranquil bursts of delightful, "DIY kitchen pop" that feel like rose-tinted views into homespun recordings. While Painted Shrines captures some of the bleary-eyed pop of Woods as well as some of their folk stylings, The Reds, Pinks and Purples feel closer to the cheery pastels of his home in San Francisco. "Don't Come Home Too Soon" is the lead single from the new album (the fourth in four years) and continues on the hazy journey with clear vocals radiating off the glistening guitar hues. The songs on Summer at Land's End were crafted slowly and then drawn together to make a unified statement. But here, and more than before, Summer at Land's End combines Donaldson's rueful pop sensibility with a parallel musical universe, one composed of pictures, dreams, and feelings without words. Even if the underlying theme of this collection is one of conflict or unhappiness, the vision of the music presents an escape to a new world, always fading in and out of sight.
