Next month, Metallica will release an impressive compilation album of covers from their landmark black album in celebration of its 30th anniversary. Today, we get Phoebe Bridger's take on "Nothing Else Matters."
I'm sure there is someone out there who could possibly be hearing Pheobe's cover of Metallica's seminal track and never know it was from one of the biggest metal bands of all time. Set against baroque string arrangements, twinkling piano, and her typically gorgeous, hushed vocals, the track fits perfectly inline with the elegant arrangements of Bridgers' breakthrough, Punisher. There is a cinematic element to this cover and you can easily picture it playing over the credits of an HBO series or in the trailer of a David Fincher film. Still, while it is a cover, it feels like classic Phoebe and would be a perfect addition to her upcoming fall tour as it fits wonderfully with her skeletal costumes and all black everything vibes that she has been painstakingly nailing for quite some time. Yes, this is a Metallica song and one of their best, but here it's a Phoebe Bridgers song and hopefully it joins fans from both worlds in perfect harmony because when Phoebe croons like she does here, nothing else really does seem to matter.
The Metallica Blacklist is out September 10.
