Alt-country, indie rock, and folk have all made up the stylings of Blitzen Trapper over the years and on "Dead Billie Jean" they fully embrace all of these collective sounds. A drawn-out fiddle calls attention early in the track as singer Eric Early offers up some of his most psychedelic lyrics about smoking mad dope with Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, and... Abraham Lincoln. There is a rustic twang to this number that adds subtle textures to give it depth. Early has describe the record as a concept album that explores "separate lives on earth" and "what it means to escape the cycle of birth and rebirth."
