"Whole New Mess" is the first song and lead single off the album of the same name and it's a sparse, but glowing track that captures the eery feeling of the year with flickering guitar strums that showcases Olsen's stunning ability to embrace isolation. Recorded last year, the album features new takes on a few tracks from 2019's All Mirrors for what is shaping up to be a delicate, splendid record. In a brief statement, Olsen said "I had gone through this breakup, but it was so much bigger than that—I’d lost friendships, too. When you get out of a relationship, you have to examine who you are or were in all the relationships. I wanted to record when I was still processing these feelings. These are the personal takes, encapsulated in a moment." On this one, Olsen commands the spotlight and basks in its remarkable glow.
