Deerhunter - "Death in Midsummer"

Deerhunter have announced a new album. Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared? is the follow-up to 2015's Fading Frontier and it's out January 18 via 4AD.

In addition to announcing a new record, Deerhunter have also shared the album's lead single and it's called "Death in Midsummer." It's a slow burning track that kicks off with an interesting, waltzing harpsichord before transitioning into a track that has the band's DNA all over it. It doesn't carry the same weight as some of their other lead singles, there isn't the intensity of "Monomania" or "Nothing Ever Happened" nor the immediacy of "Snakeskin," but it has the undeniable Deerhunter presence that only they are capable of committing to tape. It's a friendly return that hints at the band's quest to push their sound in new directions without losing their true soul. Slowly revealing itself over four and a half minutes, the track morphs into a bursting sensation that feels more inline with the band's back catalogue while still never retracing old footsteps. It's a song that couldn't come from any other band, but still offers up something new and exciting.
